What steam cleaning actually removes, and what it can't

Why do the traffic lanes stay grey after a cleaning? Usually the pile is abraded, not dirty. Dry mineral grit and DG dust get walked in and ground down into the yarn. That grit scratches the fiber face. Extraction lifts the soil. It cannot polish back cut fiber.

Hot water extraction is three steps, not one. Pre-spray, dwell time, agitation, then rinse and vacuum. Cut pile and plush in pre-war and postwar bedrooms hide grit at the base. Low-pile loop and Berber in 1980s–2000s condos wick brown as they dry. Commercial glue-down loop in offices and apartment corridors gets low moisture only. Soak it and the adhesive suffers.

Some conditions need a different plan. Pet urine in slab-on-grade homes sits in the concrete. That means pad removal and subfloor treatment, not surface cleaning. Oily soot filtration lines at baseboards in older leaky-envelope houses are a separate solvent process. Hard-water rings from DIY machines need an acid rinse. Sun-fade and dry-rot along south and west windows will not reverse.
