You see grey paths. Hall, doorway, sofa to kitchen. That is rarely a stain. It is dry mineral grit and decomposed granite dust ground into the pile. The particles are angular. They abrade fibre and scatter light, so the lane reads dull even after it is clean. Grit has to come out dry, before anything else happens.
