Why Pasadena rugs get gritty and grey before they look dirty

Blame the grit. Decomposed granite dust blows down from the San Gabriel foothills. It settles deep in the pile, below what a vacuum reaches. The particles are angular. They cut wool fibre every time someone walks across. That is why traffic lanes go grey and dull while the borders still look new. Wool and wool-blend area rugs over hardwood in older Craftsman and Revival homes hide it well, until the rug is turned over and tapped.

Dusting comes first, before any water. Water on a loaded rug turns that grit into mud and drives it toward the foundation of the knot. We agitate and pull dry soil out first, then wash.

Dye-bleed is the second worry. Older hand-knotted pieces and some over-dyed stock will run. We bleed-test in an inconspicuous spot. If a colour moves, the rug goes low-moisture or off-site instead of a full immersion wash.

Pet urine in slab-on-grade homes is a different job. Odour sits in the concrete under the rug. Surface cleaning does nothing there; the subfloor needs treatment too.
